Dutch Design Week Eindhoven

From October 23 through October 31 2010, Eindhoven presents the 9th edition of Dutch Design Week, the largest design event in the Netherlands. Around 1500 designers from home and abroad will show their work all over the city of Eindhoven from design disciplines such as industrial design, concept design, graphic design, textile & fashion, spatial design, fooddesign and design management & trends. Visitors will be given insight into the entire development process from concept to product in various disciplines ranging from industrial design to applied arts. The participants include established bureaus, high-profile designers, talented newcomers, and recently graduated designers, one of the reasons why this Dutch Design Week is the perfect meeting place for designers, companies, and public.

There are nearly 60 different locations housing one or more events. Besides exhibitions, there are numerous lectures, workshops, fashion shows and seminars during Dutch Design Week. Unless stated otherwise, admission to the exhibitions is free of charge. Please note that visitors need to register in advance for most seminars, workshops and lectures.

Design and decorating apps

So I caved and got an iPhone. Do I regret my sudden lapse of spine? No! Not one bit. I love it love it love it!
Especially the photography apps are great. I have been taking pictures off my house, friends, dog, love and city through retro lenses, lomo apps, faux Polaroid’s eyes and with a great social app called Photoswap. I recently started thinking that people must have invented apps for decorating or design buffs like myself so I did a little scavenger hunt.

The best decorating apps.

1. Dexigner

This is an app from designer portal dexigner.com. An app for the near pro interior designer. Dexigner provides up to date news about the industry, keeps you up to date on events and calendar, and informs you about events and design events specifically in your area. Not sure if it works globally, but it sure looks great.

2. The Maarten Baas app

I LOVE this one! Dutch designer Maarten Baas surprised many at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, a large furniture trade show in Milan. No expensive hand-made objets, but a sleek and simple alarm clock app for iPhone owners. Now everyone can own a Maarten Baas original! It features actors painting the screen!

3. The Home Depot app

With this app, your window shopping and bargain shopping days will be over. You can use your app to find decorating items for your home without running from store to store. Search for specific items, and make lists so you won’t keep having to go back to the store. The app also has a library of how-to-videos, complete with a shopping list so you can have all your tools and materials on hand to complete the project. The vids alone make it worth it. Shipping limited to countries outside the US unfortunately.

4. The Sherwin Williams paint app

Need some inspiration? Don’t know what color to paint your room? The Sherwin Williams App will make it easy. Take a snapshot of a wall or part of your room, and press “use”. It automatically gives color suggestions. A bit like the many online tools available but a lot easier as you don’t have to upload a picture on the web.

Small space solution for home office.

Working from home, as I have a real job too, I can do with a designated work space. I now work in any room or area of the house depending on mood, weather or what’s on telly (can’t afford to miss those BBC home shows!). But my fysio therapist recommended I buy a proper adjustable office chair and to support my back. Also, I would love a little area to call my office. We have a study upstairs actually, and all it needs is a bit of redecorating, but it’s nice to let the mind wonder. Hence my search for home office solutions today. I stumbled across one find I really had to share.

Have a look at this:

Looks like a wooden vault or something....

This stunning little piece of genius actually folds out into a small work desk with clever storage space for mail, notes, bills etc.

It sells for a 162 Euro, and I believe can be shipped pretty much anywhere. I found it on Apartmenttherapy (where else) but you can order it through Overstock.com

Sushi pillows

Usually I am not a big fan of gimmicky furniture, but I did want to share these.

Cushions in the shape of sushi. They come in nigiri and rolls and in the shape of edamame appetizer beans. They even sell little soy sauce bag shaped pillow cases.

Not all of them are great. Some of the rolls look absolutely tacky with badly drawn ingredients. And the salmon nigiri looks like a fish caught in a serious bondage act.
