Book review: Prefab Houses

As you might know, I have a thing with prefab homes. Always have. I love the idea of a cleverly designed home, fit for a contemporary lifestyle, put up in a matter of weeks, sometimes even days. You can imagine how thrilled I was when I got this marvellous Taschen Book ‘Prefab Homes’ as a gift from friends. I am helping them with a design and install for a new bathroom and I recently had my birthday but still out of the blue they surprised me with this marvellous gift.The book is written by Arnt Cobbers and Oliver Jahn, two well-known architecture and design authors. I can highly recommend it. It’s the perfect coffee table book, with tons and tons of inspiring pictures and stories about various prefab home designs and their designers.

Green Goblin’s Penthouse from Spiderman for sale

I haven’t seen the movie, but sure like this place! The penthouse in NYC’s Windsor Tower served as the home for Willem Dafoe in his role as the Green Goblin in the Spiderman movies. It just hit the market this week with a moderate $1.595 million price tag. It sounds like a lot, but keep in mind this is NYC and a pretty decent location to boot. The ceilings are gorgeous too at 18-feet and floor-to-ceiling dramatic windows. The house further features a fire-place, wooden floors and a private terrace. And off course the legitimate right to brag. “Guess where I live…”

I love the mezzanine!

I quite like the decor too with the bright fuchsia pink pillows on those Biedermeier-esque chairs. I once brought home pillow covers in the same hue but my significant other was less thrilled with them then I was. Maybe after seeing this he’ll agree to give them another chance. They match really well with antiques!

Great lay-out too. Stairs to the roof terrace conveniently located by the kitchen. I’d prefer one extra bedroom through. But hey, can’t have it all!

Floor plans of famous TV homes by Brandi Roberts and Inaki Aliste Lizarralde

Artists Brandi Roberts and  Inaki Aliste Lizarralde draw the floor plans of TV homes. For example Eddie Monsoon’s townhouse from Absolutely Fabulous; the Golden Girls’ Miami bungalow, Frasier’s Seattle apartment , the NYC apartments from SATC, Friends and the Big Bang Theory and the offices of Stirling Cooper Draper Pryce.

Brandi Roberts sells the prints as art. In her own words:

“Fantasy Floor plans was born out of my love of drawing, pop culture and TV. My hand-drawn floor plans merge Pop Art with celebrity to make art that doesn’t just entertain, but captures the evolution of the American TV home over the last seven decades”.

I hear her! Many times have I tried to imagine the lay-out of Monica and Rachel’s great flat. or the lush place of Frasier in the show of the same name. Or come to think of it, the bungalow of the Golden Girls…. I even considered drawing them out myself on more than one occasion.

But as much as I love this idea, I immediately noticed some errors. I know I know,  jealous much? But may I?

Saffron’s room in Ab Fab for instance… There are several scenes where it is clear that her door is in the middle of the room. Also, the room is in between at least two other rooms as there are also scenes with people passing her room. And Serge’s room is drawn at the left end of the hallway while in the scene where Eddy is considering knocking down the wall it is clear the room is immediately next to hers and the hallway leads straight into the door. But still, what a great idea and damn her for beating me to it……

China cloned entire Austrian town

In China, an exact copy of the Unesco World Heritage listed village of Hallstatt in Austria opened to visitors last week.

The clone, situated in the province of Guangdong, cost £600 million to build and occupies about a million square metres. It is an exact replica of the original town, located on the shores of the Hallstätter See.
