Americans know their houses

Somehow everything seems bigger in the States. Often this is in fact the case with the portions of food, the ants, the flags, the cars and very often the people. But with houses it is not neccessarily the case. However, the floor plans of American homes tend to be more clever, more convenient. Even the tiniest homes have two bathrooms or an extra room to watch TV. Also, what we lack in storage in most houses here in the Netherlands, they make up for.. and then some.

Online you can find amazing sites where you can download floor plans to look at and be jealous about. I put one site, this one, to the test.

I pretend to be a husband and father of two looking for a two story 3 bedroom house with two bathrooms. One for the kids, and one for me and my lovely wife Gayle (hey, even gay guys dream of white picket fences everynow and then!). We don’t need a very big house, so we look for a detached house of anything up to 1600 square feet which is about 150m2. In the Netherlands, that is considered a nice and spacious house. In the States is is actually considered small to average. Off course we have a dog so we need a separate laundry room or storage room with direct acces to outside. I am a straight guy in this story, so I like to set things on fire, a fireplace is no luxury. Because we bought a plot with a lovely view towards the front we want a porch in the front of the house for wine and romance on summer nights. Because it hardly ever rains where we live, I don’t need a garage, but if the plans happens to have one, we wouldn’t mind.

Mmm, sounds like a nice house!

Let’s see what the site comes back with…

I like the way this house looks…

I love the big porch in the front, and the double garage should make for plenty of storage. In future maybe the entire garage or part of it can be converted into a granny-annex or game room or study.
The floor plan however gives less reason for cheers…

There are two bedrooms with a seperate bathroom upstairs. That would be the kids rooms. Downstairs however a rather small living room and dining room in one means you be on each others nerves the whole time. I guess one could break through the wall between the garage and the living room, but our little pretend family does not have the funds for that now, so… moving on.

I also like this house, it’s very Victorian almost.

The floor plans give me and Gayle much to cheer about this time. It has a separate dining room, a breakfast nook, a large living room with firepace and two porches of which one partially screened. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms, one designed to be the master bedroom. However, Gayle and I can sleep downstairs and the kids can take the rooms upstairs.

I just noticed one negative aspect… guests will have to use our master bedroom bathroom to pee as there is no separate toilet….. Mmmm, that actually is not a very pleasant idea…
Moving on again…….Gosh, I though this would be easier…
But then, not a drawing but a bright and sunny picture, of what could very well be our next house!

It’s lovely isn’t it? And guess what? So are the floor plans!

The den downstairs will easily double as a TV room for the kids so Gayle and I don’t have to watch Spongebob all the time. Furthermore, when we have guests they can stay in that room as we will put a sofa bed in there that will fold out to a large queen size bed.  They will have to use the bathroom upstairs, but that shouldn’t be a problem. The master bedroom has a walk-in closet for Gayles shoes and dresses. The room itself is big enough for a cosy little sitting arrangement at the foot of the bed. Also, I think we might be able to put in a fireplace as the chimney goes right through the room.

So far for pretending. I am happy with my own beau and my wonderful two story apartment in Amsterdam.

Funny little table. maybe create a padded stool?

On garbage night when we were walking our dog Lola, we found this small quaint little table between someones trash.

funny little table...someone loves carpentry ;-)

It looks like it walked out of a childrens book. It has black details on the legs and on the side of the top. A funny feature is that it opens up to reveal a box shaped storage unit. Great for knitting needles or the remote control of your TV (and in our case VCR/VHS, DVD player, UPC digital set, stereo)

Storage!

Storage!

I think I will try to paint it warm grey or black and maybe pad the top with a grey-ish floral pattern or a lush velvet. I would just need to buy some round shaped padding foam and fabricated pins.

A bit like this.

A bit like this.

Only I would leave the bottom bit wood I guess. It might be too small to pad the entire thing plus I really like the legs. I guess I could draw fake milled lines in a slightly darker colour on the legs to make it looks more rich?

I would end up with a more classic version of the well known skai/faux leather knitting poof our grannies loved.

I had one in green in my room in college ;-)

Any suggestions? Let me know. I will make sure to post the final result on here.

How to score cheap antiques or design online!

The internet has allowed us to serve our ever increasing demands and needs faster than ever before. If you decide you want a Queen Anne chest or Louis Seize sofa in your bedroom, you can easily get it within a week. In the pre-internet days you had to wait until your local antiques store stumbled across one. Or you had to drive to France, the home of real flea markets. An alternative was to take a sudden and feigned interest in your great aunt so that when the old lady finally decided to kick the bucket you would inherit her furniture. Glad those days are over right?

Now, there are online auctions and flea markets like eBay and for Dutch readers; Marktplaats.
Surely there are German, French, Italian, English and other equivalents so please read on.

A good tip when cruising the web for great finds is to misspell what you are looking for.
Instead of Louis Seize search for Louis Seise or Lois Seize. People that make such mistakes usually don’t know the value of antiques so might think $100 is a huge deal for that old steh-im-weg in their basement or attic.

If I type Louis Seise in Google I get around 150 hits. One of them brings me to this website http://home19.inet.tele.dk/furnitur/Contentframe.htm#Chairs which is the private collection of a certain Mr Hansen from Denmark. Mmm… maybe he does know his way around antiques…However, it looks like all these chairs could be well made replica.

I really like this Louis Seise chair!

And this Gustavian piece. Nice!

Let’s look at the Dutch site Marktplaats. Louis Seise doesn’t return any hits. ‘Antieke sofa’ (antique sofa) secures 31 results. On of them with a vague picture of a sofa that looks like it rolled out of an Eastern European furniture factory yesterday! The kind that was all the rage for spoiled children’s rooms in the eighties. Dear sellers, just because it’s old and made of wood doesn’t make it an antique!

I did find this fantastic sofa that is listed to be a Biedermeier…. I’ll have to do a bit of research but if that is true, the asking price of €895 is a good deal!

Is it Biedermeijer, Biedermeier or Neithermeier?

Is it Biedermeijer, Biedermeier or Neithermeier?

Then let’s look for a true designer piece; the Barcelona Chair by Mies van der Rohe. Unfortunately everybody on Marktplaats knows how to spell Barcelona…. The differences in asking prices are vast though. Ranging anywhere between €450 and €2500… Make sure it’s genuine when you score one for under €1000!

Looking for Philip Starck or Phillipe Starck brings back a few hits too. In general the rule is to be creative and try other key words than the actual name of the designer. Instead of Barcelona Chair type in modern leather chair or design chair. Also, don’t be scared of a little drive to the other end of your country or state. Remember; in the end it will be all worth it if you can tell your friends that yes, that is a genuine Charles Eames and yes, you bought it for €350 and drove 3 hours to get it.

Happy hunting, and please share your stories with me!
