Pied-de-poule

Pied-de-poule; literally chicken’s foot. A dessin, mostly in black and white, woven into what looks like footprints of a chicken. As unclassy as it sounds, it has always been favoured by many Parisian fashion houses. Dior, for instance, uses the dessin for their Miss Dior fragrance.

Designers duo Mat&Jewski have incorporated the classic dessin in the lamp shade of their wonderful ‘Fleurs’ lamp. The base of the lamp is an elegant platinum style metal, and the shade is cotton adorned with beaded roses.

More and more furniture-, fabric- and fashion-designers are (re)discovering this wonderful and remarkable pattern. I’ll keep you posted if I find more.

Flintstone’s furniture

Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf recently featured a supplement about living. One of the articles was about designs with a Stone Age twist. In a time where technology moves so fast it makes your head spin, a trend of furniture inspired by the Flintstone’s is worth some attention. A few examples of the pieces they shared.

French designer Vanessa Mitrani caught the eye off many at the latest interior fairs.  The glass objects in her collection No Limits  feature fish swimming through the design!

The fish are aluminium.

Her work fits in with a trend that will adorn many homes this spring; marine flora and fauna.

Martin the mule

A couple of years ago Dutch design brand Moooi, run by Marcel Wanders, caused a bit of a stir with their Horse Lamp. A real life-sized horse statue with a lamp shade on its head. The piece came with a small table topped pig and a bunny lamp to match.

French design studio Ibride must have been inspired as they now come with a mule shaped secretary. The piece is called Martin and is made off brown laminated wood. The drawers are painted shiny white.

The designer claims his inspiration was Alice in Wonderland. Personally I think the designer of the bunny lamp, Front Design, can make a better claim to that as I don’t recall a mule in Lewis Carroll’s book….

Nonetheless, it’s a great design!
