Movie Medianeras is an ode to Buenos Aires architecture

Tomorrow, October 27th, sees the release of the Argentinian movie Medianeras in Dutch theatres. It is already screening in other parts of the world and was met with critical acclaim. The movie is a romantic comedy set in Buenos Aires. It deals with the various lives lived in this gigantic city and in between the lines sings glory to its fabulous architecture and urban design. Gustavo Taretto directed it.

Organic vase

As an urban dweller with just not enough storage in his apartment, I appreciate design that appeals without being in function. So a vase that can sit on a table without flowers, yet without being just a vase is worth a closer look.

Benjamin Graindorge designed this vase with the pretentious and annoyingly difficult name ikebanamedulla (no capital I off course, because everybody uses capitals so why should Benjamin). I like the idea of it, but am not sure I like the outcome. I like the silhouette, and I also like the frail stem-like things ‘growing’ from the bottom. But the white backdrop with the jagged edge is too bold a statement, if that.

Frances Bean Cobain all grown up…..

Frances Bean, daughter of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and singer/actress/tabloid filler Courtney Love, grew up. Off course she did, but somehow it shock me to realize she is old enough to buy a house! And a nice one might I add. When her father killed himself in 1994, a trust fund was set up for her to ensure financial security. With Nirvana being one of the best-selling bands of all time, the dough surely rolled in last year when she turned 18. The house she bought is modest, both in size and price, but nice enough for a 19-year-old!

The house is a 1930’s Spanish style home with 3.350 square feet, 4 bedrooms and 3,5 baths in a quiet canyon in the Hollywood Hills. Mrs Bean reportedly paid $1,825,000 for it. It retains many of the original architectural and decorative details such as hand-forged iron work, colorful decorative tiles, numerous stained and leaded glass windows, hand-stenciled wood beams, and vintage light fixtures and hardware. I absolutely love it to be honest.

At home with celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe

Rachel Zoe has an eye for style. As stylist of stars like Debra Messing, Cameron Diaz, Demi Moore and Kate Hudson she is very much considered one of the top stylists today. Her wonderful Los Angeles homes is testament to the fact that she knows her way with interior design too. I love how she stuck with furniture she had in her old house like the dining room table and chairs. It shows she’s doesn’t buy style, but she actually has it. Why get rid of something you like just because you are moving house?

One slight concern. An awful lot of white for a family with a newborn baby….
