OK, I know, it’s like saying you vote Republican.. but I LOVE the Ralph Lauren Home collection! It makes me want to be rich. Very very rich as the products come with a hefty price tag, but boy oh boy, would my life be complete!

Taking inspiration from a very white lifestyle, with even a hint to times when slavery was still ‘de rigeur’, Mr Lauren sure knows how to set a mood. Items with names like Plantation Chair, Noble Estate Chaise and La Boheme Desk one immediately knows what he means. One feels like a writer just looking at the black leather club chair aptly named  Writer’s Chair.

Wonderful loft in ‘Amsterdamse School’ building

On the Dutch real-estate-buffs’ online bible Funda I found this wonderful loft type apartment in a typical Amsterdam School style building.  This architectural movement (Dutch: Amsterdamse School) arose in Amsterdam around 1910. The movement is part of international Expressionist architecture.  Many houses in the Amsterdam burroughs just outside the historic center were built in that style. This building is located in the Bohemian area called De Pijp and has views of a canal. It used to be the office of a Housing Estate association. Currently it houses apartments. The one on offer is located on the fourth and fifth floor and was completely remodelled in 2007.

 The current owners created a light and very well proportioned three bedroom apartment with a sunny roof terrace. They did so in keep with the original character of the building. The first thing you notice when you enter (after a four flights of stairs climb!) is a cast iron spiral staircase. luckily, this leads only to the master bedroom. The other rooms are all on the fourth floor.

There is a large and very light living room which stretches from the front to the rear part of the house. It features many skylights and windows allowing a lot of light to stream in. The open kitchen in the back of the room gives access to the spacious and sunny terrace. A further two bedrooms and full bathroom further complement this floor.

The apartment is for sale for €410.000,- which seems fair for what you get.

Origami table by Tian Zhen

 “It all begins with folding of a paper crane at elementary school in China”. 

Thus quotes her website the Chinese born/Netherlands educated Tian Zhen. She applies the art of origami to many of her designs. In 2006 she graduated from Academie Minerva, my own Alma Mater, and started working with various studio’s and on the side pursued a career as a solo designer. 

Paper can carry the weight of much more than we think when folded with origami. In an earlier post Homevoyeurs highlighted the paper Flexible Love Chair by Korean designer Chishen Chiu. This sofa/seat design also makes use of paper folded and formed to give it enough strength to seat up to 16 people. Inspired by this magnificent quality of paper Tian designed the LOTUS side table. The glass top is made of plexiglas, and the ‘paper’ is actually Tyvek, a synthetic woven material also used in the building- and the automotive industries.

The table can be changed from one shape to another in only a few seconds. In total there are six unique shapes.

What we ALL want! The homes of production designer Jon Hutman

Production designer Jon Hutman is the master mind behind some of the most amazing homes in contemporary cinema. Did you like Helen Hunt’s pad in What Women Want? Or were you, and you should be, jealous of Cameron Diaz’s quintessential L.A home in The Holiday? Or how about Diane Keaton’s Long Island hideaway in Something’s Gotta Give? That house had home-owner across the globe going out on rampant hunts for the same brass handles, the same stools, pots, jars and everything. And most recently, Meryl Streep’s Santa Barbara’s cottage in It’s Complicated. All these were the work of Mr Hutman. In most cases, set decorator Beth Rubino assisted him.

 Jon Hutman is known for his casual typical American designs. They look as if they grew organically and hardly any planning went into them.
