IXEA; Roman furniture

The Dutch Limburgs Museum in Venlo currently hosts an exhibition about furniture in Roman times. Set up as an Ikea store, the exhibition allows visitors to try the items on display. And everything is for sale, yet not for the wallet friendly Ikea prices. A small side table, that took 4 days to make, costs about $5.000. All the furniture are replicas of items found in archeological sites as Pompeii and Herculaneum. The exhibition runs through to January 2012.

House that looks like Hitler

This is too funny to pass on.

“Morning. Here’s a house that looks like Hitler. Your welcome.” Thus read a tweet from UK comedian Jimmy Carr one day. This tweet turned Welsh Charli Dickenson into a bit of a celebrity Britside. It all started with a snapshot she took of a house in her neighborhood. Below is Dickenson’s photo.

The House that looks like Hitler

Several online and print media all over the world published about this picture, but often cutting of the top and bottom of the original pic to make it resemble Hitler even more.

Yes, this makes the house look even more like Hitler

Imagine owning this house. Every time you come home you enter the mouth of one of the world’s most hated men. Velcome Home!

Do you think this house looks like Hitler? Or do you have a picture of a home that looks like it has a face? Please share!

Dutch Cabinet

Dutch artist Sara van der Heide has been drawing Dutch cabinets since October 14, 2010. That was the day the current Dutch government started. Prime Minister Mark Rutte started this cabinet (Dutch; Kabinet) with the support of right-wing party PVV who won a huge amount of votes. She decided to draw a Dutch cabinet in the furniture sense of the word every day this government will be in place. The drawings showcase our diverse and often colonial history and make a great statement. However, I find the cause a bit annoying. A democracy is a democracy so if a party wins, no matter how much you dislike them, you have to deal with them. I believe that if you want to prevent them from winning again, you need to reach out to the people who voted for these folk in a way they understand. In most cases, they have absolutely no radar for art in any shape or form. As much as I love this project, I think it is lost on the them.

Ben Stiller’s Hollywood Hills mansion

The hills high above seedy Hollywood Boulevard are home to many of the rich and famous we know from the celluloid screen. Often these houses read like a  history timeline of Hollywood by virtue of their famous owners. It is not uncommon for a home to go from one movie star hand to another. If this is the case with Ben Stiller’s compound is not sure. But boy is it impressive!

It was on the market for $12.500.000 last year but withdrawn. Now it’s back after a $1000.000 price drop for $11.495.000. The listing describes it as follows:

Step through the gates of this walled compound and into the crown jewel of Outpost Estates. Two separate homes flank close to an acre of lushly landscaped grounds that rival the Bel Air Hotel. To the south sits a 1929 authentic Spanish meticulously restored and sensitively updated by design team Roman & Williams based in New York, to the north a stunning Mediterranean redefined with a Contemporary point of view. A 1 br guest house, a magnificent pool, outdoor dining/living areas and a beautiful grassy yard complete this extraordinary estate.
