I passed!

Hurray! Yesterday the mail came bringing good news. My diploma interior design. I took a crash course from January to June this year, to rekindle my spark for interior design.

Have a look at my presentation for the final exam. Mind you, this was a given assignment. Redesign the ground floor of a 30’s villa for a gay couple in their forties with a love for bold colours. I am particularly proud of the 3D drawings.

Great photography sells a home!

In an older post I already touched the subject; how good photography sells a house. Or rather, how bad photography doesn’t! People hunting for homes usually look online first. The very first thing they see of a potential home is a picture. If that picture doesn’t immediately grab their attention, chances of them buying the house are slim. I have a hard time understanding realtors who don’t live up to this golden rule. Why would a rule that applies to groceries, cars, clothes etc not apply to what might very well be the most expensive purchase ever?

Somebody who understands this is Dennis van Duijn of O Kijk! Panografie. He specializes in panoramic photography, and puts his talents to use for presentations of homes for sale as well as museums, restaurants and hotels. A recent project he shot, a houseboat in Rotterdam, sold  within a matter of weeks after it was put on the market. I am pretty sure the presentation had something to do with it. The price, a friendly € 315.000,- might have had something to do with it too; but that’s Rotterdam for you! A similar boat in Amsterdam would have set you back an easy €150.000 more.

Sack the realtor

In keep with the Dutch blog Foutehuizen.nl, who were featured in an earlier post here, I thought it would be fun to post a few more pictures taken by realtors that need to be sacked; today.

Realtor rake in hefty bucks on the buying and selling of homes of others. For this they are supposed to advice you on how to best buy and sell a home. In my humble opinion, selling a home starts with an attractive presentation. Yet it is shocking to see how often realtors seem to be blindfolded when they take pictures of properties they are about to put on the market.

A recent example I stumbled upon.

Sack the realtor exhibit 1

A nice enough home in a leafy suburb of Amsterdam. Nice sized rooms, big kitchen, back yard bordering a park, it has a lot going for it. Yet this is the picture they decide to use as the main image to present it. A picture my dog could have taken! This is the first impression they want people to have? A weird angle of a cluttered kitchen with cloths hanging in clear view? Bizarre. Especially considering that the realtor in this example usually takes better care. Maybe a momentary lapse of sanity, let’s call it that.

Can you find other examples where the realtor needs to be sacked? Let me know!
