City Lofts for the Urban traveller

Designer pied à terres, that’s how MyCityLofts describe their recently launched home-away-from-home apartments in the Dutch city of Rotterdam

Dutch architect Arlette Goslinga buys, remodels, decorates and personalizes apartments in the most sought after area’s of Rotterdam. She turns them into wonderful loft-like short- or long stay rentals. Arlette oversees the remodeling and decorates the places herself. From the tiles in the bathroom to the spatula in the kitchen drawer; she pays equal attention to all. There are even books on the shelves. The idea is to make guests feel like they are living in Rotterdam for at least a while.

Fold your bowl

A recent article about my home on Apartment Therapy featured a picture of our fruit bowl. It’s a plastic/polymer bowl that we bought as a flat sheet. The edges are cut out to resemble a Dutch skyline with windmills, canal houses and draw bridges. Once put on the table the shadow cast by either sun or lamp shows the skyline on your table.

Many people asked me where I got it and who designed it. Margriet Foolen was responsible for the design, and I bought this bowl at Thinking of Holland. A dutch design shop I posted about earlier. It is available through their webshop and only costs € 22,-.

Thinking of Holland….

The first line, well, translated that is, of a Dutch poem. But also the name of Dutch Souvenir-Cum-Design shop Thinking of Holland. I love their collection and first got to hear about them looking for the Chick-a-dee smoke detector I wrote about a few months back. They sell Dutch design with a souvenir twist. Designs by big names like Droog Design, Porceleyne Flesch, Royal Goedewagen, Moooi, Studio Job to name a few. And the good news is, they now opened up shop online too!

Warning:  this site will likely make you spend too much!

Check them out here!

Martin the mule

A couple of years ago Dutch design brand Moooi, run by Marcel Wanders, caused a bit of a stir with their Horse Lamp. A real life-sized horse statue with a lamp shade on its head. The piece came with a small table topped pig and a bunny lamp to match.

French design studio Ibride must have been inspired as they now come with a mule shaped secretary. The piece is called Martin and is made off brown laminated wood. The drawers are painted shiny white.

The designer claims his inspiration was Alice in Wonderland. Personally I think the designer of the bunny lamp, Front Design, can make a better claim to that as I don’t recall a mule in Lewis Carroll’s book….

Nonetheless, it’s a great design!
