Cleverly designed prefabs for the less fortunate

Sometimes great plans are just destined to take form. The prefab homes of young designer/architect Brett Zamore for instance. For his thesis at Rice University School of Architecture  he rehabilitated an old mansion in his alma mater Houston, Texas. This caught the attention of Architecture for Humanity who commissioned him to design an easy to build home in Biloxi Mississippi for people who lost their home to hurricane Katrina. This again inspired him to start designing a line of prefab homes specifically for those who might not be able to afford regular new-builds. The result, two designs, called up+dn, were sold to various companies building affordable homes for the financially challenged. Families all over the Southern States are now happily living in his homes.

I particularly like the shutters and porch on the homes in the images below. They are reminiscent of long sweltering summer evenings in the South where people drink cool mint juleps and wave fans in their faces. The colour scheme makes for a luxury feel and give the homes a chic appearance.

What does the house of design expert Nate berkus look like?

Design guru Nate Berkus, of Oprah Winfrey fame, can look back, and likely forward, on a magnificent career in Interior Design. Since he started his own company in 1995, he designed some of the most prestigious interiors in the United States and abroad. After Oprah picked him up to be the design expert on her show, there was no holding back. Nate is an established name in the world of interiors. And he is cute too…

Ever wondered how this talented guy would decorate his own home? Well, we’re in luck as he recently put his Chicago condo on the market. Lot’s of stunning images to gawk at!

I love how the house looks accidentally fabulous as opposed to designed. What do you think?

Thanks Elle Decor for the images and Hookedonhouses for the original post!

Waking up in a dumpster

It sounds like the morning after a bender with a few drinks too many. However, if you ask Berkeley California-based Gregory Kloehn it can be a regular morning ritual. Gregory managed to fit an entire home in a dumpster.  And,  in line with Bay Area standards (at least to my knowledge from living there back in the late Nineties) the home is fit with hardwood floors and granite counter tops. In this video Gregory tells us all.

Hunky brit actor sells his modest bungalow

So I heard from Big Mama, of Real Estalker fame, that Jason Statham, an actor we like for the very obvious reasons, is selling his Mid-Century architectural gem above the Sunset Strip.  Listing information shows it has 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, a swimming pool and a smallish yet private and secluded garden.  With 2281 square feet it is modestly sized. But the location is sure going to attract buyers who like to combine the hustle and bustle of the strip with the quiet and calm of the hills. I love those glass-wood-graphic-open style homes. This one reminds me a bit of the home of Colin Firth in A Single Man.
